Health and fitness Effects of EMF Radiation

The radiation from RF-EMF can cause damages to DNA and tissue and even disrupt the blood-brain barrier. These effects are real, and ARPANSA is actively engaged in discussions with EHS communities, medical experts as well as researchers.  is emf radiation harmful  will continue to review research on the health effects of EMF radiation.

DNA damage is caused by RF-EMF
The exposure to electromagnetic fields created by humans (EMFs) are associated with DNA damage as well as health effects. EMFs can disrupt the intracellular ionic levels, which are crucial to maintain a cell's electrochemical balance. It can also cause disruption to cell homeostasis and result to DNA damage. Moreover exposure to EMFs can also trigger an increase in the production of free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS).

The exposure to radiation from RF-EMF has been linked with alterations in male germ cell development. This is due to the development of germ cells into spermatozoa, aswell maturation of the functional aspect as spermatozoa move throughout the epididymis. To determine the sensitivity of RF-EMF exposure to male germ cell development, a specifically-designed waveguide machine was constructed to expose unrestrained mice to RF EME in the range of 2.2 W/kg.

In a recent study, researchers have discovered exposure to RF-EME causes an oxidative DNA damage to spermatozoa. Sperm DNA fragmentation increased by 18% after an entire week of treatment and by 23% after five weeks. Furthermore, DNA damage in mitochondria was observed by measuring the level of a biomarker, 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG).

However the fact that RF-EMF radiation isn't yet considered to be a carcinogen. But, numerous studies have found that exposure to RF-EMF radiation can damage DNA health in variety of cell varieties. In one such study, scientists exposed Vero cells to an EMF of 100 Hz for 45 minutes. They evaluated DNA damage at 48 hours following exposure to determine if the exposure affected the integrity of DNA.

RF-EMF causes tissue heating
Although the effects of RF EMF are usually considered as thermal in nature, some studies have shown that non-thermal influences are also evident. These effects may account for some of the unresolved observations in epidemiological studies of EMF hypersensitivity. This is why it is crucial to take into account non-thermal effects when conducting systematic reviews.

Effects that are not thermal from RF-EMF could occur on the cell's membrane. This is an area which has already been extensively investigated. In particular the electrochemical properties of cell membranes has been studied. Current understanding suggests that energy generated by RF-EMF greater than 1 MHz is transmitted to tissues via dielectric and ionic dissipation. Previous theoretical analyses indicated that the energy that is transferred to tissues could be as high as 200 kV/m.

The electric properties of tissues are controlled through the distribution and composition of water molecules and other molecules inside the body. This determines how absorbent EMR RF is by various tissues. The tissues with the highest conductivity tend to absorb more EMR field and produce more of an effect. This is the reason the degree of tissue heating does not increase steadily from outside to inside, but occurs in hot spots. Bone and fatty tissues are less susceptible to heating by RF as compared to other tissues, since they are not as water-based. content.

The extent of the field's electromagnetic energy depends on the strength and frequency of the field. Muscle tissue absorbs more field energies than the other tissue, and converts it into heat more efficiently. Usually the depth of penetration for RF EMF is determined in millimeters (mm). However, the greater the frequency, the more shallow the penetration.

RF-EMF causes  emf radiation -brain barrier disruption
Researchers have discovered that RF-EMF can alter the blood-brain-barrier changing sleep patterns as well as neurotransmitter levels. Furthermore to this, the effects that EMF on brain activity are associated with neurodegenerative disorders. For example, EMF from mobile phones can alter electroencephalogram activity as well as sleep patterns, and the actions of nitric Oxide and xanthin oxidase.

Researchers at Vienna University have studied the effects of RF-EMF exposure on brain cells. They also examined how ELF EMFs on the brain system. Though the cellular mechanisms that are involved aren't fully known, there is a clear association between ELF-EMF exposure and myelin depletion. This relationship might account for the electro-hypersensitivity symptoms of electro-hypersensitivity. Fortunately, there are  is emf radiation harmful  known methods to regenerate myelin in the brain.

Researchers have observed that exposure to the frequency of 900 Mhz EMF caused a rise in the permeability of the BBB and raised the signs of neuronal injury in rodents. They also observed an increase in the release of albumin to neurons. Further, they found in 30 minutes 900 MHz exposure, 99mTc-MIBI increased its permeation to the cerebral cortex. But this effect didn't occur when using Evans blue-based injections.

Despite these findings, RF EMF does not have a clear mechanism to disrupt the BBB. Evidence suggests that non-thermal EMF exposure can increase erythrocyte membrane permeability, which could influence the BBB and also increase the efflux of calcium-ion. Furthermore, the presence a 99mTc-MIBI radiotracer within the brain is also associated with an increase in the permeability of BBB.
